Part 2

Take your strips A,B and C. Sew 1 dark strip (A) to 1 light strip (C). Repeat 3 times. Sew 1 medium strip (B) to 1 light strip (C). Repeat 6 times. Press all seams towards the darker fabric. Crosscut into 2" strips. You should have at least 32 dark/light strips (label A2) and 64 medium strips (label B2).

Take your strips D,E and F. Sew together in the following two combinations.

One set dark (D), light (F) dark (D). Crosscut into four 2" strips (label C2).

One set dark (D), light (F) medium (E). Crosscut into four 2" strips (label D2).

Take your 4" squares (H and J)

Put one of each together, right sides together. On the back of the lighter fabric draw a fine pencil line across the diagonal of each pair. Put a pin in the other corners to hold the pieces together. Feeding them one by one through the machine sew a seam exactly ¼" from the pencil line. After you have sewn all of the pieces, repeat the seam on the other side of the pencil line. Cut along the pencil line. Press open gently, pressing the seam towards the darker fabric. Check the size of each square, it will probably need trimming to be exactly 3½". You should have 24 half-triangle squares (label E2).

Take 8 squares (P) and 4 rectangles (Q).

Make four flying geese by the sew and flip method. Place a square (P) at one end of the rectangle (Q), right sides together. Draw a pencil line along the diagonal (see diagram). Sew along the pencil line. Cut the corner off ¼" from the sewn line. Fold (flip) the corner back. Repeat with the other side (label F2)

You can use the cut triangles for another project.

Make eight more flying geese using 16 squares (P) and the 8 rectangles (R) (label G2)

Take the triangles T, V and W.

Take 1 light triangle (T) and 1 dark triangle (W). Sew them together along one short edge as in the drawing. Take 1 medium triangle (V) and 1 dark triangle (W). Sew them together along one short edge as in the drawing. Note that these are mirror images. Press both seams to the dark fabric.

Take 1 light/dark triangle and 1 medium/dark triangle and sew them together along the long edge, locking the seams to match points. You should now have a 3½" quarter-triangle square, with the two dark triangles opposite. Make 3 more of these (label H2).

End of part 2, next time your blocks will start to take shape.
