London Quilters is now planning ahead for the next exhibition and members have started on the blocks for the group raffle quilt. The charities to be supported are Mind and the Rainbow Trust.
The quilt will be a scrap quilt, with light and dark contrasts - pale yellows and creams for the light side with rich colours for the dark side. To give you an example of the possible end result, here are four layouts using the same blocks, each giving a very different result.
At the last meeting on 18 April members brought in dozens of blocks that will make a huge difference to the finished size of the quilt but we still need at least 50 more to ensure that it makes a maximum impact when selling raffle tickets. Everyone has a huge stash of scrap fabrics and these blocks will go a little way to reducing your scrap bag! So please bring them to the meeting on 16 May.

Here are the instruction for the Scrappy Nine Patch blocks:
The fabrics for this quilt must be 100% cotton. Please ensure that the measurements are accurate otherwise we will have problems when assembling the quilt. It is recommended that a stitch length of no more than 2.5mm is used for all seams to prevent fraying and distortion.
1. Select your fabrics and sort them into light, medium and dark. Put away the mediums for another day and just use the lights and darks. The lights should be pale yellows/ cream and the darks should be rich colours.
2. To make the half square triangle cut out light and dark fabrics 3” square. Place a light square onto a dark square with right sides together. On the light fabric, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other as in Figure 1.
3. Using the narrow stitch length sew a scant ¼” on each side of the drawn line, as marked with the broken lines shown in Figure 2.
4.Cut along the drawn line, press the seam allowance towards the dark fabric and trim off the little triangles. Measure the pieces and trim to give a finished size of 2 ½” square.
5. Cut out squares 2 ½” from the light and dark fabrics.
6. For each block you will need 2 half square triangles, 3 light and 4 dark fabrics.
7. Following the layout in Figure 3 below, sew the squares together and press all seams. Your finished block should be 6 ½” square. Please note that the images below are not to scale
