Sewing Evening  :  17 July 2017

Picture
The sewing evening was a noisy and friendly one at the end of a very hot day but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.   I had taken in a lot of threads to give away and they vanished very quickly - for this I was extremely grateful as I did not want to take them back home with me.   I had also taken in some rusted and coloured samples to give a demonstration on how one can play around with simple kantha running stitch.  Using natural products to change the colour of fabric is popular with many quilters and textile artists and I touched briefly on some of my experiments.  For example, I had been playing around with black beans and produced a very nice silver gray.  But  I still prefer to use them for Puerto Rican black bean soup than for dyeing!

Jeni's quilting session was based on the question - how do you make a decision what to do when the project instructions say "Quilt as desired"?    The main things to think about are first, whether it is to be a practical object or a wall hanging and secondly, whether you prefer hand or machine quilting.   Then Jeni talked about the options with lots of inspiring samples.

Lucy had a large group stitching name labels - now members will know who is who at future meetings!

Below is a note from our member Muriel Hirsch - maybe her granddaughter might become a quilter?

Maggie Paykel
I am really pleased to tell you how much my granddaughter, Chloe, and I enjoyed our first sewing evening. It was so friendly and everybody had the generosity to share their knowledge - the talent in the group is amazing. Special thanks to Tricia Dickson, who taught us how to make a name badge.  She was so inspiring that we are going to sew and embroider another one. Indeed, Chloe was so proud and happy that she forgot she was shy...

One  thousand thanks indeed.

Muriel Hirsch
