Linda Seward : Quilts: from Utility to Art : 3 October 2017
Several members of London Quilters made their way to St. John's Wood Church Hall on 3 October for a talk by our member and former chairman, Linda Seward to the Regent's Park Decorative Arts Society. The talk was titled 'Quilts: From Utility to Art'.
Linda touched briefly on quilt construction, the different styles of traditional quilts and why they were made historically. But the main focus of her talk was the transition from quilts being seen as utilitarian objects to being recognised as works of art in their own right.
The talk was accompanied by many slides of antique, traditional and contemporary quilts, including detail shots, so visitors could get a good idea of the works. Linda explained the techniques involved in making the quilts which included the use of paint, stencils and lights! Several of Linda's quilts were also brought so that visitors could see her work close up and in detail.

Personally, I think the art world is being rather slow in recognising that textile art has a definite place in it but Linda's talk might help in the process of education - we wait in anticipation.
