Sarah Hibbert at QuiltCon 2017
The work of our talented member, Sarah Hibbert, has been juried into this year's QuiltCon, to be held in Savannah, Georgia. The press release issued by QuiltCon says it all!
Hertfordshire Quilter to be Featured at International Modern Quilt Show
SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - FEBRUARY, 2017 – Local quilter Sarah Hibbert’s work will be featured at QuiltCon 2017, an international modern quilt show that takes place Feb. 23–26, 2017, in Savannah, Georgia. QuiltCon is held each year by the Modern Quilt Guild (MQG), a nonprofit organization that supports and encourages the growth and development of modern quilting.
Sarah’s work was one of only 350 quilts selected from a pool of over 1,500 entries for this year’s show. Her work was chosen by a jury of modern quilters.
Sarah has been a local Quilter for the past 30 years, belonging to the The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles since 1985 together with being involved with the early start of the Modern Quilt Group QGBI. She became part of The Modern Quilt Guild (USA) a couple of years ago. She likes to use traditional patterns with simple colours making her quilts her own in a unique way. She also belongs to a local group, Peartree Quilters together with being an active member of London Quilters.
“I am extremely excited to show my quilt in Savannah this year,” Sarah says. “It’s my first time exhibiting a quilt at QuiltCon, and I am honored to have been selected alongside some of the world’s top modern quilters. I am so glad to be a part of this incredible community and have this opportunity to share my work and contribute to the movement.”
Sarah will have the following work exhibited at the show:
‘Serendipity’ - A free form quilt pieced using hand printed fabric from various sources including my small pieces.
Machine quilted.

Quiltcon Trip : Savannah 2017 : Sarah Hibbert
I joined the Modern Quilt Guild based in the US 3 years ago and have followed their annual convention with great enthusiasm online, logging in to see major quilter’s share their work and knowledge.
I booked my ticket last July and as the date approached I took a chance to submit an entry and was so thrilled to have it accepted out of an entry of over 1800 quilts. So in February I set off on an incredible trip to Savannah, Georgia, where I met some great people, learnt more than I will ever be able to put into practice and was privileged to see my small modern quilt hung with almost 350 other varied and vibrant entries. My quilt, Serendipity, was machined pieced using a mixture of hand printed linen and cotton, simply machined quilted as opposed to the expertly heavily quilted pieces that hung alongside it.
The highlights of my trip were two workshops - one with Jen Carlton-Bailly where I mastered curved piecing and another with Tara Faughnan in which I learnt colour balance. A day of lectures was 'awesome' covering subjects such as Minimal Quilts, Tap into your Creativity, Wing It, letting a quilt evolve and integrating tradition. The event was very much an Instagram based experience, with everyone sharing their addresses and positive encouragement. The Guild created an app giving me my daily schedule and buzzing in when demonstrations and book signings were taking place. I had no excuse to miss anything. This, together with exploring the beautiful city of Savannah in bright sunshine with my friend Pat from Chicago, both on foot and a trolley ride made for a fabulous break.
After a full and fun week I returned home full of news ideas and with many new friends to follow on Instagram. I am already planning my trip to QuiltCon 2018.
