Helen Parrott : "One New Thing After Another" : 19 September 2016
Helen Parrott was the speaker at our September meeting and gave a lively talk about her art, followed by a workshop the next day.
Maps and archaelogy, beaches, seasons and the natural world are among the inspirations for her work. A traditional wholecloth quilt with its lines of regular stitching led to an exploration of the variety of ways running stitch can be used with big and small needles, fine and coarse fabrics, thick and thin threads - and the explorations are still continuing.
Hand stitching was described as drawing with thread. Deadlines help Helen focus and she also finds it invaluable to work with others.

The workshop on mark making and hand stitching the following day started with creative exercises, including brief critiques on each others' impromptu collages in paper, wax resist drawing to create pattern then sampling the differint aspects of running stitch and its variants, radial and circular stitch .
