Phoenix Gardens Agricultural Show : September 2016 : Maggie Paykel
London Quilters were invited about three months ago to have a stall at the Phoenix Garden Agricultural Show. I had never heard of it. After a discussion by the LQ committee we decided to take the stall as we could show off the charity quilt and perhaps sell some raffle tickets.
Lyn Fry and helpers managed to get the quilt made in record time to go to Dragonfly Quilting who did a sterling job with the quilting. Lucy Poloniecka ordered the raffle tickets and they arrived three days before we were due at PGAS on 10 September. Then it was all systems go!
Jane Steward, Judy Roose and I met up at PGAS near Centre Point and St Giles Church at 10am on 10 September. We were met by a friendly organising group, who thank goodness, immediately did their job by putting up a smallish tented structure as by now it was belting down with rain - as it did all day! We tried to keep the charity quilt dry. Judy did a magnificent job in selling raffle tickets. Jane chatted to people so we might have a new member by Monday evening. I kept the stewards going by buying cakes from the WI stall.
PGAS did not charge us for the stall as we were selling raffle tickets for charity. We have been asked back for next year. Now we know what the set up is we decided LQ should do it again. We think that we could have a go at selling fabric, thread and kits thereby raising funds for PGAS and LQ. Jane noticed that it would be an idea to organise something for the children as there were so many of them running around, as the grounds were in the middle of a large social housing estate. Let us hope that the weather is better next year.
Ah, I hear you say, what about the Agricultural side? Well, apart from Punch and Judy, Morris dancers and a brass band, there were goats, calves, ducks, geese, a New Zealand pig and the most wonderful collection of chickens that you have ever seen. Look up Polish Frizzles.
